Differences between "Rex" and "The story of Gelert"

Both stories are about a dog and its owner, and a little baby. The dogs are both strong and faithful and they are being told to guard the house. In the end of the story the owner thinks that the dog has killed their daughter/son. In the story “Rex” the baby is a girl and in “The story of Gelert” the baby is a boy. Rex’s owner is a farmer, named Mr. Soames, and Gelert’s owner, Llewelyn, is a prince. It feels like “The story of Gelert” is written in older times than the story “Rex”. I thought about, for an example, when Rex picked baby Anne up by her nappy and nappies didn’t exist back in the days. Mr. Soames has a wife and Llewelyn’s wife is dead, so when Mr. Soames come home he’s with his wife while Gelert sees the “tragedy” alone. In “Rex”, when he has to guard the house, they say they’re going to the market while in “The story of Gelert” the owner is going to go out hunting. It’s more modern in the story of “Rex”.

The story “Rex” is told by Rex, the dog’s, perspective and in “The story of Gelert” it’s told by Llewelyn, the owner’s, perspective. In “Rex” you know what the dog is doing and what he thinks. It gives you a little more instinct of what happened when he fought the wolf and so on. In “The story of Gelert”, in the end, you only know that it is a dog, a wolf, and a lot of blood; you don’t know exactly what happened. When you know all what happened in “Rex” you don’t think Rex has done something.  In “The story of Gelert”, when you read it at first, you may actually think that Gelert has killed the baby. But then, Rex also looks guiltier when it’s only him and blood, while in “The story of Gelert” it’s a dead wolf besides Gelert, and then, it’s quite obvious what happened.

Something I don’t understand is that; when Rex hears the wolf outside, why does he go out and fight the wolf? That’s a stupid action. He should have stayed inside; the wolf wouldn’t has come in to the house. I don’t know how it was with Gelert, if the wolf came in to the house or if he went out and fought the wolf, just like Rex did, and then dragged him in.

The baby in “Rex” started to laugh before Mr. Soames had pushed the trigger while in “The story of Gelert” the baby didn’t do anything so Llewelyn just killed the dog, because he thought he’d killed his son. That’s sad, Gelert only wanted to do the right thing and then he gets killed. I feel so sorry for him. I think the message with the stories is that you shouldn’t leave babies alone with your dog; even if your dog is faithful, and also that you should think before you do something. Like, before you decide to kill your dog.
